 2017 Preview

Wilcox Academy finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record.

Since 2010, Wilcox Academy has gone a combined 31-44. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Wilcox Academy has managed to compile a record of 163-133. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class A and 17th in the AISA.

The Wildcats are led by head coach Strother Gibbs who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-15 over the past two seasons at Wilcox Academy. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gibbs.

Coach Gibbs' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 5-15 (25.0%).

The Wilcox Academy Wildcats will play in Class A region two during the 2017 season.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season. Wilcox Academy came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Sparta Academy on Friday, August 25 at Wildcat Field. Last year the Sparta Academy Warriors finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class A region one. The Warriors closed out the regular season with a loss to South Choctaw Academy by a score of 48-7.

Wilcox Academy and Sparta Academy have met a total of 29 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 17-10-2 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2016 with Wilcox Academy winning by a score of 28-14.
